Card: 1929 Churchman Babe Ruth
Grade: PSA 4.5
Where I Bought It: eBay (Best Offer Accepted)
Price Paid: $900
Recent Value from Card Ladder:
- PSA 4.5: $911
Why I Bought It:
I’ve been wanting a Babe Ruth card from his playing days for a while, and the 1929 Churchman is one of the more affordable options compared to his rookies or the iconic 1933 Goudey cards. There were several other options released during his playing days within my budget, which include the 1932 Sanella and the 1932 Bulgaria.
However, I preferred the 1929 Churchman among the more affordable options. While it doesn’t mention Ruth by name, the artwork is unmistakably him, and the card’s vibrant design and historical appeal make it a standout.
This PSA 4.5 had good eye appeal and strong centering, and it fell within the price range I was looking at. The negotiation was tough, starting at $1,287 before agreeing to $900, but I felt comfortable with the price, especially after seeing a PSA 5 sell recently for $930 on Fanatics Collect.
Investment Outlook & Hold Plan:
This is a long-term hold for me. I believe cards from Ruth’s playing days, even lesser-known issues like the Churchman, could have strong upside if vintage demand grows. My minimum target is $2,000, but honestly, this is a card I’m in no rush to sell. It’s one I’ve been eyeing for a while and I’m happy to keep in my collection for years to come.
