Arena Club Overview
Arena Club is one of my favorite platforms for buying and trading sports card. With its no-fee trading system and 10% seller fees (lower than most competitors), it’s a collector’s dream in many ways.
However, when it comes to their slab packs, the question of whether they’re a good buy is a different story
What Are Arena Club Slab Packs?
Slab packs are mystery packs offered by Arena Club, containing pre-graded cards across different tiers. The appeal lies in the potential to pull a “grail card”—a high-value card worth 25-50x the price of the pack. Packs are priced anywhere from $50 to $1,000. One huge plus is that Arena Club is transparent about the cards inside and shows the exact odds of pulling them.
The Breakdown: Odds
However, the odds are where things get tricky:
1. Grail Cards
- Odds: 0.01% to 0.13% on average
- Value: These cards are often worth 25-50x the price of the pack
While the grail cards are undoubtedly exciting, the odds of pulling one are so slim that it’s hard to justify buying packs purely for the chance at one
2. Chase Cards
- Odds: 0.5% on average
- Value: Typically around 2x the price of the pack
These cards are often worth more than what you pay for the pack, but the odds of pulling them remain relatively low, and the payoff isn’t life-changing
3. Other Cards (Lineup)
- Odds: The majority of cards fall into this category
- Value: Usually less than the price of the pack, sometimes significantly so
For most buyers, pulling one of these cards means taking a loss—sometimes a big one—on their investment.
The Buyback Option: A Safety Net?
Arena Club offers a “buyback” option, where you pay 10% more for the pack (e.g., $220 for a $200 pack) to be able to sell any card you pull for 80% of the pack’s price. While this is a nice safeguard against pulling a dud, it still results in a ~30% loss without receiving any card. In my opinion, increasing the buyback refund to 90% of the pack’s price would make this feature much more appealing and collector-friendly
What I Like About Slab Packs
- Fun: Ripping packs is inherently exciting, and slab packs offer a wide range of card types and values
- Transparency: The detailed breakdown of potential pulls and odds is something the hobby desperately needs
- Better Floor Than Traditional Packs: Even the lower-tier cards are pre-graded and have some value, providing more value than what you’re likely to get from traditional packs
The Downside for Investors
From a pure ROI perspective, Arena Club slab packs are tough to justify. While they can be a lot of fun to open and offer an exciting variety of cards, they are best approached as an enjoyable experience rather than a serious investment strategy. The odds of pulling a grail card or even breaking even are slim. And while the buyback option softens the blow, losing 30% of your pack’s purchase price without receiving any card still stings
Final Thoughts
If you enjoy the thrill of ripping packs and don’t mind spending some money for the fun and variety, Arena Club slab packs can be a great addition to your collecting experience. However, if you’re approaching them strictly as an investment, the numbers just don’t add up. And that’s okay—after all, Arena Club is a business, and they need to make money too.
I’ve bought a few slab packs myself and will be sharing my results in future posts, so stay tuned for a deeper dive into the ROI of specific packs. If you are interested, slab packs are available to purchase at any time on Arena Club’s website.
